Dear Subscriber First Name, As we approach Lunar New Year on February 10th, here are some tips on bringing the festivities into your classroom and celebrating the Year of the Dragon. What is Lunar New Year? Ancient Chinese people used a lunisolar calendar which uses both the position of the sun and the moon. Like the Gregorian calendar, the Ancient Chinese calendar had twelve months, but each month started on the new moon, lasting 29-30 days until the next new moon. Because a solar year is longer than twelve moon cycles, there was a leap year every two or three years, with an extra month. The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival, is the most important festival in China. It occurs on the first new moon between January 21st and February 20th. Why incorporate Lunar New Year in my classroom? Cultural Awareness: Foster an inclusive environment by introducing students to diverse traditions and celebrations. Global Perspective: Explore the significance of Lunar New Year as one of the most widely celebrated festivals worldwide. How do I incorporate Lunar New Year in my classroom? Understanding the Zodiac: Teach your students about the Chinese zodiac and their animal signs. Encourage discussions about the characteristics associated with each animal. The Great Race: Tell the legend of the Great Race and how the years got their names. Have the students write a play, make costumes and put on a performance. Hands-on Crafts: Incorporate projects like crafting traditional Chinese New Year decorations or creating personalized zodiac signs.
