Bes was ugly.

While most Egyptian gods were tall and elegant, Bes was depicted as an ugly dwarf with a headdress, short and stocky with a big belly, a beard, and a fierce face that often stuck his tongue out.

He protected families and children.

Egyptian parents believed Bes would keep their babies and children safe from harm, bad dreams, and dangerous animals like snakes and scorpions.

Bes loved music and dancing.

Unlike many serious Egyptian gods, Bes was known for playing musical instruments, dancing, and bringing joy and laughter to people.

Bes scared away evil spirits.

Egyptians believed that Bes's fierce, frightening appearance could chase away demons and bad luck. His scary face was meant to protect people, not hurt them.

Bes was shown facing forward.

Most Egyptian art showed gods from the side, but Bes was usually painted looking straight ahead, which made him seem more personal and friendly to families.
